Lou Reed famously sang that there was only one good use for a small town. When you grow up in a small town you 'grow down' - 'you hate it and you know you'll have to leave'.
But something interesting is happening in many of our small towns: something that many larger places, still in hock to cloned aspirations of economic development and an institutional inertia that appears to believe the development boom of the last decade will return, have yet to…

Since the not-for-profit ATCM was founded in the early 90s, we have worked with hundreds of locations around the UK, and overseas, to support people and communities in shaping environments to make town centres better, where local people feel a sense of ownership, and visitors are made welcome and business can thrive.…

High street gurus SpeakTo are offering an hour’s free consultancy to town centres that have missed out on the £1.2 million pot of Government cash to rejuvenate their shopping areas.
The town centre consultancy has been inundated by enquiries from disappointed high streets in need of help.
From Holyhead to Herne Bay town centres have contacted SpeakTo expressing their frustration about losing out on the Portas pilot money, wanting help now to capitalise on the work already…

I think that some members here, especially from Scotland, will be interesetd in a lively, but informed, discussion I have instigated on High Streets in the RTPI Scotland Linkedin discussion group (You do not have to ne an RTPI member to join that group). It follows the publication last week of a 'Vulnerability Index' that is an attempt to measure vulnarability and lay out the town centres across Scotland that are most at risk of literally dying in the face of the recession. The aspects of…

Do you want to put life back into your high street or town centre?
Are you part of a Town Team, have you bid to become one of the Portas Pilots, or are you just someone who wants to get on and improve the centre of your community? If so, then High Street Camp is for you!
High Street Camp (#highstcamp on Twitter) is an unconference - a chance for people who want to get things done to get together, hear from people who've already had a go, share experiences and come up with new ideas.
It's a participative event, not a series of lectures or presentations - a chance to roll your sleeves up and work with other people who share your concerns and interests.
We'll be using the Library Lab at Willesden Green, north London, which has lots of good workshop spaces and is in a local centre that illustrates some of the difficulties and opportunities high streets are currently facing.
There is no charge for the event but we'll ask for voluntary donations on the day to help cover costs, or you can contact us if you'd like to sponsor the event and have a link on the High Street Camp page.
The provisional programme is:
10 -10.30 arrive
10.30-11 introductions and networking
11-12 - themed workshops looking at broad issues - eg how to make your high street greener, empty shops, local loyalty schemes, community asset development. The idea is to share what you have done, identify tricky issues and agree at least one idea that will be worked up in the afternoon sessions. There will also be an option to repeat earlier workshops in the afternoon. If you'd like to run a workshop, please contact us.
12-12.45 feedback from each workshop to everyone.
12.45-2pm lunch
2-3.30 teams work to develop solutions to problems they identified in the morning session, or repeat morning workshops if they prefer.
3.30-4.30 teams present their work pecha kucha style
4.30 conclusion and feedback on ideas from Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the RSA.
...and time to socialise afterwards!
We'll put the ideas presented in the afternoon together in a short report that we'll publish later for the benefit of people who can't make it on the day, and (we hope) to inspire people for more events in future.
High Street Camp is sponsored by the following good people (so please check out their websites):
